Town of Waxhaw

The charming Town of Waxhaw lies a few miles south of Uptown Charlotte in Union County. Named for the Waxhaw tribe of Native Americans indigenous to this area of the Piedmont, the town was settled in the mid-1700s. The economy moved from farming to manufacturing, aided by the arrival of the railroad in 1901. Following WWII, the textile industry shifted away from the area, forcing the town to reinvent itself.

Today Waxhaw is a vibrant community known as a center for antiques, specialty shops and restaurants, and its historic district is on the National Register of Historic Places.

Residents and visitors enjoy First Fridays, sponsored by the Small Town Main Street Promotions Committee and a weekly farmers' market open April through December.

Spring Fest takes place the second weekend in May, and highlights local artisans and crafters. There’s something for everyone on Main Street.

The town’s July 4th Celebration is an area favorite, attracting 12,000+ people for a parade down Main Street, a “beach” party and fireworks show.

The annual outdoor Autumn Treasures arts and crafts festival, car show and the Grill’n and Chill’n on Main sanctioned BBQ cookoff takes place over the second weekend in October. Always family friendly!

The Holiday Festival of Lights kicks off the Twelve Days of Christmas on the Friday after Thanksgiving as 75,000 lights on Main Street brighten the historic area. The festival continues Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through the weekend before Christmas. Another annual tradition is the Christmas Parade, attended by 10,000+ people.
